Intensive Training Diary – day #4

Monday, May 17th, 2010

Warmup on Bag

  • round 2 – elbows and knees
  • round 3 – hands, elbows, knees and kicks

Walking Drills
Attacker focuses on drilling combos; defender focuses on blocking/absorbing punches.

  • 1) Jab, cross, step
  • 2) jab, cross, hook, step
  • 3) cross, l.hook, cross, step

Memory Blocking Drills
Work some basic punches with basic blocks

  • 1) jab (parry off the chin)
  • 2) cross (push away from the face with the lead hand)
  • 3) hooks (palm over the ear, answering the telephone position)

Kicking Drills

  • 1) a few rounds of power kicks (back leg kicking)
  • 2) a few rounds of switch kicks (front leg switching to back to kick)

Technical Sparring Drills

  • 1) jab, counter jab
  • 2) jab, cross – counter jab cross

Advanced tech and combatives:-

Stick and Dagger

  • A series of counters vs Angles 1-4, countering the initial attack and "setting the trap" for the next attack. Picking up both hands and finishing opponents.

Single Dagger

  • The ruse – isolating one hand, and forcing the other hand to come into play  defensively. Method of entry is created.

Both methods rely either upon the opponent's intent to attack, or their intent to defend themselves. Setting a trap anticipates that an aggressive opponent, under stress, will take the most direct and convenient route to destroy his enemy (a route that is presented, of course, by you). The ruse anticipates that an opponent will act with a sense of self preservation when attacked. Both are important tactics, regardless of specific context.

Single dagger

  • Creating an entry through reaction

  • High-low combos

THE FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS
"The spirit of the Southern Philippines epitomises the unconquerable spirit of the Philippine Islands. Men of all creeds and colours have scrambled for a foothold in the Southern Philippines. Their bones still lie there, and only the spirit of these intrepid men remains. The Spaniards had not envisioned and could not perceive the courage they were to meet from the defenders of the land."
