Rapid Arnis Training: July 26th-30th Class Notes

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Tuesday 27th

Empty Hand CQC

  • Doubletap entry to high chamber
  • Doubletap entry to low chamber

Explore striking combinations from both chambers. Be sure to close the gap effectively, with continuous striking, and use of elbows and indexers to provide tactical advantage.

  • Doubletap entry to jam (ie. split entry)
  • Doubletap entry to bolo punch combination

Do not confuse bolo punches with chain punches. Although the two look similar from a distance, the bolo punches use the fleshy part of the fist in a ripping and tearing motion (for this particular application). Try to stay close-in to increase your options with regards natural weapons and indexers.

  • Force opp to cover up > apply armbar and immediately switch to head control and takedown

As soon as the opponent's hand comes up to cover, apply the armbar to draw his attention to his arm, then immediately switch to take head control. From here, it is relatively simple to apply takedowns, restraints, and follow-up strikes. In this case, we twist the chin over the shoulder to break the opp's balance and perform a takedown.

By the end of the class, students should be familiar with principles of distraction, indexing, rusing, and closing the gap.

Wednesday 28th

Louis' Stick and Dagger Special

Basic overview:-

  • 4-count stick and dagger
  • Block, lock and disarm vs the 12 Angles
  • Practical applications of stick and dagger
  • Form 1
  • Form 2

Rapid Arnis Training: July 19th-23rd: Bulletpoints

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Here are the class notes from this week's training:-

Tuesday 20th: Close Quarter Combatives

Edged weapons: Point up

Technical:

  • First 5 angles of attack (adding indexing and thrust + slash variants)
  • Chopping entry from inside
  • Angle 4 entry from outside

Application:

  • Inside entry –> switch –> quick exit
  • Outside entry –> pass –> jam
  • Outside entry  –> destruction pass –> ruse + shroud

Further exploration:

  • Using similar principles of movement, positioning and anatomical stoppage, apply techniques in an empty-hand context (adapting the above techniques to suit)

Wednesday 22nd: Core Technical

Empty hand

Thai pads/kickshield:

  • Jab, cross, roundhouse kick
  • Double roundhouse kick (indexer, switch kick)
  • Double front kick (snap kick, push kick)
  • Travelling side kick
  • Off-angle travelling side kick
  • Close range side kick
  • Stamp kick (to shin)
  • Jab, cross, long knee

From half clinch:

  • Using clinch to manipulate opponent's weight distribution
  • Knee
  • Kick to inner thigh

18-count lock flow:

  • Full lock-flow from start to finish
  • Counter-locks 7, 8, 9, 10, 11

Important note: Locks rely on three things – load, lever, and pivot. Altering or removing on of these things will mitigate the lock's effectiveness. When practicing locks, try to identify these component parts, and you should be able to develop your own counters to them.

Rapid Arnis Training July 12th-16th: Review

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Tuesday 13th

A simple drill was used as a platform for training doubletaps, passes, covers, traps, and jams. This evolved into freeform drill, with more applications from the inside and outside. Elbows were added, but with more than the usual "smashing" applications. Elbows were used to spear, cut, and displace the opponent to provide a tactical advantage. Finally, edged weapons were added, with first an emphasis on non-lethal applications, and then an emphasis on ballistic locks to provide a window of opportunity, and expose target areas.

We will be working more on close-quarter-combat over the next few weeks, focusing on combinations, basic throws and takedowns, and joint manipulation, across all weapontypes.

Wednesday 14th

The session began with a basic review of the Rapid Arnis 12 Angles, with stick and dagger and doublestick variations as well. A doublestick 4-count and 6-count drill were added, with the focus on being able to mix-and-match at will. The final part of the stickwork involved a simple deflect-and-counter drill, incorporating switching techniques. Some basic bladework was added – first a blocking/chopping drill versus left and right attacks. Then a split-entry drill.

In the coming weeks, more foundation-level material will be expanded upon. This will give new starters a chance to learn from scratch, and give advanced students a chance to pick up further applications derived from drills and techniques they are already well familiar with.

New classes beginning next week!

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Phew – what a scorching summer it's been so far! I hope you've all been hard at work training (yeah, right!).

As those of you who have been following the website will know, we have opened up two new classes – Tuesday nights will be at Fit Rooms, and Wednesday nights will be at Portobello Green Fitness Club. Both of them are excellent venues, with Fit Rooms having a fully kitted out boxing gym, and PGFC having a very spacious studio for us to train in.

We've received some good feedback from our students, and are happy to announce earlier start times (Fit Rooms starts at 7pm, and PGFC at 8pm), as well as cheaper class prices (£5 and £7 respectively).

Please check the "Classes" section for more info, and the location maps can be found on the "Contact" page of the website.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

THE FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS
"The spirit of the Southern Philippines epitomises the unconquerable spirit of the Philippine Islands. Men of all creeds and colours have scrambled for a foothold in the Southern Philippines. Their bones still lie there, and only the spirit of these intrepid men remains. The Spaniards had not envisioned and could not perceive the courage they were to meet from the defenders of the land."
