Arnis Alliance 2011 Results

A big congratulations to the Rapid Arnis London team for their performance in this year's Arnis Alliance tournament at The Martial Arts Show. Birmingham NEC played host to some of the best fighters and instructors in the country, as they competed in a wide range of fighting formats. Sadly, the doublestick section of the tournament had to be cancelled due to time constraints, but the singlestick was immensely exciting. A massive thanks to Kwoklyn Wan for hosting the tournament, Jon Broster for organising it, and Pat and Lucy O'Malley for sponsoring/supplying it. We are already looking forward to next year!

The results:

Andrew Janson – men's heavyweight division – BRONZE

Carl Rein – men's middleweight division – SILVER

James Janson – men's middleweight division – BRONZE

Andres Olivares – men's lightweight division – BRONZE

James Dismore – men's lightweight division – RAL MAN OF THE MATCH (unanimously voted best strike of the day)

Excellent work lads – we are all very proud of you!

SOAS Closed for Summer

Our regular classes at SOAS are closed for the summer holidays, and will resume in October.

In the meantime, we will be running various workshops, seminars, and intensive courses. Please check the website regularly for details on these as they become available.

Personal classes will continue as normal.

Specialist workshop – March 13th

Nigel Herterich will be coming over to pay us a visit on March 13th for Specialist Workshop. There are only 12 places available for this workshop, and they are available to everyone, regardless of experience level.

Here are the details:

Date: Sunday March 13th

Time: 2pm-6pm

Venue: Fit Rooms, 254-258 North End Road, SW6 1NJ

Content: Bone breaking and dislocation; Takedowns and finishes; 3rd party intervention

Cost: £30 in advance; £35 on the door

I will be collecting money for this event over the next week. You can either drop it to me at class (SOAS, Monday and Thursday) or transfer it to me via Paypal or bank transfer.

This is an excellent opportunity to train with one of the top guys in Rapid Arnis, and is certainly not to be missed.

Pressure-test workshop – Feb 27th

We will be running a pressure-test workshop on February 27th at Fit Rooms in West Kensington (nearest tube station is West Brompton). There are only 8 places on this workshop, so please be sure to sign up early to avoid disappointment.

Date: Sunday February 27th

Time: 2pm-5pm

Cost: £25

Content: Padwork, light sparring, multiple opponents, eyes-closed drills, etc…

The workshop is aimed mainly at those wishing to test their skills in a high-pressure environment. This is essential for senior Rapid Arnis practitioners, and highly recommended for those wishing to develop the combative element of the system.

RA LONDON – BACK IN ACTION FOR 2011!

Welcome back!

I hope you're all well-rested from the festive season folks, cos we've got lots of training to do this year, starting now!

Wednesday classes at Ladbroke Grove start today, 8pm-9.30pm.

Mondays and Thursdays at SOAS start next week, 7pm-9pm.

I also STILL need to sort out membership books with a lot of you – especially if you attended the recent grading. I know admin's often not a strong point for a lot of us (especially me!) but this is ridiculous. Gimme a hand here guys, and speak up!

Also, i'm finally going to get around to ordering those club T-shirts. If anybody else wants one, please let me know ASAP so we can order them all together. I'll be seeing Fari today just before class (around 7pm).

The last week of classes before the Christmas break…

Hi guys,

As most of you know, this will be our last week of classes before the Christmas break. Please read the information below for details:-

Monday: SOAS class closed due to university exams

Wednesday: PGFC class closed due to studio refurb

Thursday: Sparring day – please bring a groin guard and gumshield (if you wish to do unarmed sparring). You will be allowed to spar without these, but you have been warned!

We will also be going for a drink after class on Thursday – all are welcome – please come and join us!

Rapid Arnis Grading in Torquay

On November 28th, the following members of Rapid Arnis London were assessed and achieved the following grades with flying colours – well done chaps!

Paul Murray – Brown II

James Dismore – Blue II

Carl Rein – Blue II

James Janson – Blue I

Thanks also to Kaveh for coming down to train alongside us on the Saturday, and Ed Quartey for helping to guide the seniors and assess them on the Sunday. Most of all, a big thanks to Pat O'Malley for providing some top class training over the weekend, and a gruelling and thorough assessment of our skills.

Dartford Challenge Results!

A massive congratulations to Louis Beale, James Janson, Paul Murray, Andres Olivares, and Thijs Gerberandy for a great performance at this year's Dartford Challenge. For most of the team, this was their first time in competition, and they certainly made an impression. A big thanks also to Nigel Herterich for hosting the tournament, and thanks to all who fought for their great sportsmanship, and excellent standard of play.

Closing Tuesday Evening Classes

Due to a combination of work and personal training commitments, the Tuesday classes at Fit Rooms will be closing from November onwards. Our thanks to Mario at Fit Rooms for providing a top-class venue and training equipment, and we hope to run seminars and specialised training courses there in the future. My apologies for the inconvenienced caused to students attending this class.

Upcoming Events

A quick update to let you all know about some special events this week:-

Thursday, 7pm-9pm: Sparring workshop (SOAS)

We will be putting a workshop together to teach useful techs and applications for sparring. For seniors, we are also hoping to push you past your comfort zone, and work on endurance sparring and multiple opponents.

Saturday, 1pm-4pm: Masterclass (Northolt)

Darren Davies and Andrew Janson will be running a masterclass at Northolt Village Community Centre. If you are interested in this, please let us know ASAP, as we'd like to know how many we have attending. Details are on the "Events" page.
